Altun Ha Belize

The ancient Maya Site of Altun Ha is a modern translation of the English Rockstone Pond, a nearby village.  Altun Ha, located only an hour’s drive from Belize City, is the most proximate and accessible of the Maya sites to the Tourism Village.

Most of the site of Altun Ha was developed around the Maya Classic period between 200 to 900AD. The site of Altun Ha was discovered in 1963 by amateur Mayanist and pilot Hal Ball. In 1965 Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum Conducted intensive restorations and excavations of the site into the early 70’s.

It is here at Altun Ha archeologist discovered the largest carved jade object ever found and presently known of Maya Civilization, it is of Kinich Ahau, the Sun God.  The jade head is 15cm high and weighs an astonishing 5kg.
Your tour of the magnificent Maya site of Altun Ha begins at the Tourism Village in Belize City. From here you will drive through the North Side of the city, with a brief history into the country of Belize and its people, travelling up the Northern Highway to mile 19 where you turn off onto a small gravel road heading into the rainforest.

Upon arrival at Altun Ha, you will disembark your bus, where your guide will give you a memorable tour of the site and its surrounding flora and fauna.
